The latest viral video is a Volkswagen commercial featuring mini Darth Vader. I’m sure a lot of you have seen this already, but if you haven’t, you can watch below:
I’ve always paid attention to viral videos like these. But I wonder whether or not they actually serve their purpose of selling a product.
Yes, this one is a very nicely made video. However, I watched it four times and I knew the point was to sell a car, but I only took notice of the specific car after thinking about writing this post.
Whether or not this ad generates sales for Volkswagen, I bet the marketing team will get a huge pat on the back, possibly a pay rise, and awards from top advertising ceremonies .
It makes me question… If companies had the choice to pick a hugely viral ad that generated little sales, or a lower profile ad that generated a solid amount of sales, which one would they pick?
Did you get sold by this ad? Or did you smile, and credit it as a “nice” video (completely forgetting about the point of it)?
